Macron 'never meant to offend' Italy with migrant comments

UN:

Will the new Italian prime minister still be coming for lunch Friday?

"We will not change (our position) on ships belonging to non-governmental organizations", Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Macron on Tuesday blasted what he called Italy's cynicism and irresponsibility in turning away the Aquarius, with his office saying that France doesn't want to "start a precedent" that would allow some European countries to breach worldwide laws and rely on other EU member states to take in migrants.

Salvini said France had committed to accepting 9,816 migrants under a 2015 European Union redistribution scheme to relieve frontline countries of the pressure of asylum-seekers.

On June 10, Italy refused to accept the ship Aquarius, carrying migrants rescued in the Mediterranean.

Salvini declared victory after the standoff over the fate of the hundred of migrants on board prompted Spain to agree to accept them.

Antoine Laurent, from SOS Mediterranee, which also co-operates the ship, echoed the same sentiment.

France was not alone in its criticism.

It is now en route to Valencia, escorted by Italian navy and coast guard units.

More than 1.8 million have entered Europe since 2014, and Italy is now sheltering more than 170,000 asylum seekers, as well as an estimated half-million unregistered migrants.

Salvini's far-right League party campaigned on taking a hard line on migrants ahead of March's election and rose to power as part Italy's eurosceptic, populist government that took office this month.

France sought to take a more conciliatory tone on Wednesday.

The Maltese authorities, in their turn, said the issue was not under their jurisdiction and only chose to send food to the ship, but denied entry to its ports.

Mr Salvini called on Mr Macron to apologise.

French President Emmanuel Macron is to meet with new Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte on Friday in Paris.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday that the issue of migration was "a sort of decisive test for the future and cohesion of Europe". "We need to maintain dialogue", a source close to Macron said as the president visited the western town of Rochefort.

SOS Mediterranee said men who were still on the deck of the Aquarius and exposed to the elements were dizzy and vomiting, and taken inside the ship to be treated for seasickness.

Asked whether he thought the row was over, he said: "I very much think so, yes".

As EU politicians have dithered or traded blame, refugees have continued to arrive.

Spain's offer of a safe harbour to the 629 migrants aboard the NGO vessel Aquarius after Italy refused to welcome them is a relief to the "desperate souls" on board, says the Financial Times.
