Canadian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen fastest in first practice

Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing

The Red Bull driver said at a news conference Thursday before the Canadian Grand Prix that he's exhausted of questions about the crash in Azerbaijan that also knocked out teammate Daniel Ricciardo, or the one in Monaco that sent him to the back of the grid.

Verstappen was one of the star performers on Saturday afternoon, splitting the Mercedes drivers for a spot on the second row. "But for sure qualifying is not as important as Sunday so we've got to go well then too".

Hamilton was struggling throughout qualifying, despite looking strong through most of the weekend, but he surely will not have expected to end up down in fourth on a circuit where he has taken six wins and six poles in 10 events, nor to be beaten by a team-mate for only the second time in his career here.

Hamilton is looking to equal Schumacher's record of seven career Canadian GP wins.

Sauber's Marcus Ericsson also didn't make it out of Q1, he glanced the wall in Turn 9 and was lucky to not break something on the auto, as he continued on he almost collided with a Red Bull, narrowly avoiding contact. The auto all weekend has been really strong, every session we made progress with the vehicle and I'm feeling confident on the track. It will be interesting to see how it does in the start of the race, especially because Red Bull will start on the hypersoft.

Going into the weekend, Mercedes-AMG's Lewis Hamilton leads the 2018 Drivers' Championship with 110 points.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, the 2014 Canadian GP victor, is coming off a victory two weeks ago in Monaco. "But as I said at the start, I am exhausted of these questions and if I get any more I am going to head-butt someone".

"We knew that, in general, we're lacking power, so we just try to compensate with that", said Verstappen.

When it comes to the twisty stuff, 11 of the 14 corners are taken below 100 miles per hour, which makes it particularly hard on the brakes and tires when the cars are coming from the high-speed straights.

After the high of triumphing in Monaco, Daniel Ricciardo qualified sixth behind Kimi Raikkonen, who ran wide onto the grass in his final attempt to improve his time.

Regarding how often that happens, Ricciardo said: "I wouldn't say a lot, but we have a pretty good off-track relationship. It will be very close again".
