Words like "paucispiral", "ankyloglossia", "haecceitas" and "koinonia" won Karthik Nemmani, an Indian-origin boy from McKinney, Texas, the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday.

Third place contestant, Abhijay Kodali, is also from Texas.

He said there were eight or nine words during the prime-time finals he didn't know - a rare admission for a national champion.

The end of the biggest Scripps National Spelling Bee in history came abruptly, and it wasn't the conclusion that many expected. She first competed in the bee as a cherubic 9-year-old.

Sometime after 8:30 Thursday evening, one of 16 youthful spelling aficionados will win the Scripps National Spelling Bee along with $40,000, a trophy, and trips to NY and Hollywood to appear on popular television shows. Contestants started the three-day bee on Tuesday this year - an extra day was added this year to accommodate the number of contestants.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a three-day, nationally televised event in which more than 500 kids compete with one another to spell increasingly hard English words. She was participating in her fourth consecutive national spelling bee.

"I tried to take it in a good way", he said.

The first national spelling bee was organized in 1925 by the Louisville Courier-Journal and was taken over in 1941 by the old Scripps-Howard Newspapers chain.

After her defeat, she was swarmed by dozens of current and former spellers who wished her well, smiling throughout. These are the words people most often asked Google for help in spelling.

"She was just as graceful as she could be", bee program manager Corrie Loeffler said.

While kids participating in the USA spelling bee are spelling convoluted words like "pratincolous" at the moment, it turns out that most of us are still having a hard time spelling words like "beginning" and "probably" correctly.

Atman correctly spelled cantico in round two and vitascope in round three.

On Wednesday night, bee officials used test scores to determine that 41 spellers would move on to the finals, to compete under the glaring lights of prime-time television.
