Valve removes 'Active Shooter' from Steam amid outcry

The Active Shooter game has been removed from Steam after received an angry blacklash

Valve, the company that operates Steam, made the decision to remove "Active Shooter" late Tuesday.

Valve Corporation pulled "Active Shooter" from the Steam Entertainment platform hours after a petition demanding it be removed topped almost 200,000 signatures.

The popular video-game streaming service Steam has removed a controversial game set to be released next week from its website.

The game is titled "Active Shooter" and slated for a June 6 release.

Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter, Jaime, 14, was killed in the 14 February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, welcomed the removal of the game as "amazing news".

Despite the game already being canceled - an online petition against that game is still garnering support with thousands of signatures. Demands from anti-gun charity The Infer Trust have proven fruitful, causing Valve to launch an investigation into the title, alongside developer Revived Games and publisher Acid. She said Valve took the game down at first, but then put it back once the public outcry had died down.

That could refer to malware or viruses, but Valve also has a list of content that developers should not include in their games. In addition, both the game developer (Revived Games) and publisher (ACID) have been banned by Valve Corporation from using Steam. However, in an interview with PC Mag, Berdyev claimed his involvement merely amounted to allowing Active Shooter's actual creator to use his United States bank accounts for Steam payments.

At Bits+Pixels, Benkel says customers need an I.D. or a parent with them to buy the more violent games. Content that is "patently offensive or meant to shock or disgust viewers" and "content that exploits children in any way" are both on the list.

The "SWAT simulator" title Action Shooter has been removed from the Steam platform. One video of the game showed the shooter killing civilians.

Valve has pulled games from Steam before - some because they were not original creations.

It wasn't the reach that anxious people but it provided a clear example of a video game that almost everyone is calling inappropriate. "Ninety-nine percent of the people who play this game are going to have no intention of saying, 'I want to go and shoot up a school.' (That's) 99.999 percent".
