"Interview" Magazine, Founded By Andy Warhol, Is Shutting Down After 50 Years

Interview Magazine, founded by Andy Warhol, folds after nearly 50 years

A publication created by Andy Warhol almost 50 years ago, "Interview" magazine, has folded amid legal disputes with former staffers who allege the company owes them hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation.

News that the magazine will fold on Monday trickled out in a series of reports, which were eventually confirmed by staff members on Twitter.

Owned by Peter Brant, a billionaire art collector who acquired the magazine in 1989, the closures have also brought back to light the resignation of its former fashion director accused of sexual misconduct.

Interview had gone through several overhauls since its birth, with the most drastic shift happening after Warhol's death in 1987.

Fabien Baron, who left interview as editorial director in April due to lack of payment after a decade as editorial director, said he's "saddened and surprised by the news that Brant Publications has chosen to shutter the cultural icon that Interview has been since its founding".

In addition, Jane Katz, a former associate publisher, claims Interview owes her $230,000 in unpaid fees and that she was also unjustly fired, and the former president of the magazine Dan Ragone also stated that Interview owes him $170,000.

The publication, which was launched in 1969, has reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which entails the liquidating of assets.

But in its glory days, little conferred sophistication like appearing on the cover of Interview, then named Andy Warhol's InterVIEW.

Baron and Poiblanc are just two of those claiming Interview owes them money.

Baron's lawsuit is not the only one Interview is dealing with.

Former associate publisher Jane Katz, who says she was sacked without cause, also charges the publication owes her $230,000 in unpaid wages, while former Interview President Dan Ragone alleges he is owed $170,000.

The wonderful interviews I got to do as a contributing editor for #interviewRussia and Interview Germany...

In the case of Interview, it represents the end of an era and a sobering reminder of how once-mighty media institutions have fallen hard.

After Sischy's exit, Interview took a more mainstream turn that included Kardashian covers (including the infamous Kylie-in-a-wheelchair shoot).
