A police spokesman told the BBC: "Both men had returned from a nightclub and had complained of breathing difficulties, and they were admitted to the hospital, one died and another is in very critical condition".

Thomas Howard, 25, was admitted to hospital in the capital Colombo on Sunday after suffering from breathing problems and died soon after, said his club Durham City RFC.

Mr Howard died on Sunday and Mr Baty, who had been critically ill, passed away in hospital today.

It is said that two players from the team had complained about breathing difficulties and were rushed to a leading private hospital in Colombo on Sunday, a day after Durham City Clem's Pirates played a friendly match against CR&FC in Colombo on Saturday (12).

The players, both from Durham, were on tour with one of the club's teams, the Clems Pirates.

The club previously said that in both cases the breathing problems were non-rugby related.

The following morning, two players fell ill and were taken to hospital, police said.

Several players had gone to the nightclub after playing their tour-opener against Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club in Colombo on Saturday.

A British rugby player has died in Sri Lanka after returning from a night out - with a team-mate left in critical condition.

Howard's death was confirmed in a club statement issued on Monday.

"We ask the media to respect the privacy of the families at this very hard time".

The British High Commission (embassy) in Colombo said it was supporting the families of the two victims and were in contact with the local authorities.
