Facebook suspends about 200 apps that may have misused data

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was grilled by Congress over the Cambridge Analytica scandal

After being burned to a crisp having been found to be manhandling Facebook users' data, Cambridge Analytica's ashes blew away on 2 May. The committee claimed that Facebook's Chief Technology Officer, Mike Schroepfer, had failed to address the committees concerns about certain issues, resulting in the committee posing further questions to Facebook.

As a direct response to the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, Facebook recently launched a bounty program that rewards people who find and report any data misuse by app developers on its platforms. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook announced that the investigation began in March itself and since then they looked into thousands of apps and suspended 200 of them.

Facebook has failed to fully answer 39 questions submitted by United Kingdom members of parliament that aim to explore the social network's approach to data privacy and fake news, according to the parliamentary committee charged with investigating the matter. The growing use of social networking opened the door to the misuse of personal information via identity theft, cyberstalking, content-based image retrieval, privacy invasion, and more. A Cambridge Analytica spokesperson said the company used Twitter for political advertising but insisted that it had never "undertaken a project with GSR focusing on Twitter data and Cambridge Analytica has never received Twitter data from GSR".

"We are investing heavily to make sure this investigation is as thorough and timely as possible", Archibong said.

It did not name the apps that have been suspended but said they would be subject to a more thorough investigation into how they handle user data. "It is disappointing that a company with the resources of Facebook chooses not to provide a sufficient level of detail and transparency on various points including on Cambridge Analytica, dark ads, Facebook Connect, the amount spent by Russian Federation on United Kingdom ads on the platform, data collection across the web, budgets for investigations, and that shows general discrepancies between Schroepfer and Zuckerberg's respective testimonies", Collins said in a statement. However, this is yet another reminder that when you agree to sharing your data with one app, it is going to be mass circulated, ending up online. What will the final count be? Ideally, Facebook's in-person inspections of these hundreds of app-makers will turn up the truth sooner rather than later.

The question over how many clicks or swipes it takes for users to change their privacy settings was also dodged.

Do you think it's time governments took legal action against Facebook for these constant data leak issues?

But these 200 apps will undoubtedly add to the 87 million users affected by Cambridge Analytica alone.
