6 killed in Indonesian prison clash between militants, police

The terrorist inmates seized all weapons of five anti-terror policemen whom they killed on Wednesday during the clash in one of the blocks of the prison which is located on the outskirt of Indonesian capital, according to him.

A counterterrorism investigator said in a text message that at least five officers were killed after being taken hostage in the rioting late Tuesday, while another officer was still being held captive by the inmates.

The Islamic State group's Amaq News Agency said its fighters took part in the riot.

The riot broke out when an inmate complained over security checks to a food package he received, Iqbal said, without giving details.

The Mobile Police Brigade (Brimob) headquarters is located in Depok, south of Jakarta, and houses a number of Islamist militants in the world's biggest Muslim-majority country.

Authorities said the riot began when an inmate shouted and banged on the walls to protest a delay in getting food from his family that was being checked by officials.

Iqbal denied that Islamic State was involved.

"We're still negotiating with them, we're still talking to them", he said. "The bodies have been transported to the Kramat Jati police hospital", National Police spokesman Brig.

Police officers maintained tight security around the jail and kept onlookers away from the entrance.

IS sympathisers have carried out a series of mostly low-level attacks in Indonesia over the past few years.

Last year, an attack by two suicide bombers, using pressure cookers packed with explosives, killed three police and wounded 12 at a Jakarta bus terminal.

It happened four days after the arrests of three Islamic militants who planned to attack the headquarters and other police stations in the same town.
