New York AG Schneiderman resigns amid assault allegations

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman resigns after assault claims

By morning, he was under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney's office. "We are through the looking-glass with that with the president on many issues". Selvaratnam, who was born in Sri Lanka, said Schneiderman started calling her his "brown slave" and made her say that she was "his property".

"A tremendous betrayal. There's no other way to put it", Kluger said. "But he abuses them privately", Selvaratnam told The New Yorker.

Ironically, just a few weeks ago, the pro-abortion National Institute for Reproductive Health honored Schneiderman with its "Champion for Choice" award.

The accusations rocked the state and added another chapter to its history of political sex shockers, including the prostitution scandal that felled Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer in 2008 and the serial sexting that ultimately put former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner in prison last fall. Until this week, he was widely expected to run for governor after Cuomo.

Once in Albany, Schneiderman was so disliked by his colleagues that Democrats and Republicans alike conspired to redraw his district, placing him in one that took Schneiderman out of his liberal base on the Upper West Side and further into Washington Heights.

Schneiderman was a top adversary of the president and his agenda, having been involved in multiple lawsuits against Trump administration policies.

"No one is above the law", he said late Monday. Contradicting his accusers, he characterized his behavior as "role-playing and other consensual sexual activity".

The New Yorker article was co-authored by Ronan Farrow, who first wrote about the allegations about Weinstein.

Schneiderman said in a statement that he "strongly" contests the "serious allegations and "while these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time".

Separately, Mr. Cuomo also said on Monday that he would direct an "appropriate NY district attorney" to investigate the allegations.

The former AG, who had become a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement and sought legal action following the sexual harassment allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, said in a statement that he "never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross".

"He was cutting off my ability to breathe", she said, accusing Schneiderman of drinking heavily, taking sedatives and pressing her to drink too, saying "drink your bourbon, Turnip".

Mr. Schneiderman has always been regarded as one of the state's most progressive politicians, even before his 2013 lawsuit against Trump University and his subsequent suits against the Trump administration made him the darling of the political left. After then-Gov. Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal, his successor as AG, Andrew Cuomo, used the office the same way - and is now seeking a third term as governor. If multiple candidates want to run in a party primary on September 13, some Democrats expressed a preference to let acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood continue to run the office instead of giving one person an advantage by taking office now.

Schneiderman ultimately went to the hospital, where he received several stitches above his left eye.

Over the years, Schneiderman has built a reputation as an advocate for victims of domestic violence, even introducing a bill in the State Legislature in 2010 that made life-threatening, intentional strangulation a violent felony.
