Tiger shoots 73 to stay inside cut line at Quail Hollow

Golf: Woods, Mickelson together again at Players Championship

Tiger Woods watches his tee shot on the second hole during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday, May 5, 2018. He responded on the final three holes at Quail Hollow, the "Green Mile", playing them in 2-under.

"He asked if he could be the world No. 1, I said absolutely", said Swatton, who would become Day's coach, caddie and confidant.

Nick Watney - in the final group for the first time in nearly four years - lies in second after overcoming a double bogey on the 10th with four birdies on the last six holes. "I feel more comfortable on faster greens". I hated it the first time. "I'm hitting the ball well enough to contend but I'm just not making any putts". Day finished No. 1 in strokes gained around the green and No. 2 in strokes gained putting on the week. He finished at 12-under 272.

He had only seven birdie opportunities inside 20 feet, even though he kept the ball in play for the most part. He'd just made two bogeys in his last three holes and parred the par-5 15th, which is one of the easier holes on the course. A birdie at the 10th got him to 12 under, but things almost turned disastrous a few holes later, when Day bogeyed the 13th and then badly hooked his drive into the water at the 14th.

"I didn't putt well again", said Woods, who needed 31 putts on Sunday and ranks 136th in strokes-gained/putting on the week.

Tiger Woods failed to take advantage of a course that was 228 yards shorter and soft enough that the players actually found pitch marks on the greens.

At least he has the weekend. "I could easily have shot 7-under par and ended up at 3, which is a good number but disappointing, too". Watney, a five-time victor on tour, is finally fully healthy and looking to get back to his winning ways, with his last victory coming at the 2012 Barclays at Bethpage Black. And he was still out of golf recovering from back surgery last summer when Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship.

He and the rest of the field will hope for a better performance next week in the high-profile Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

This is a new course to him.

And as well as those star players performed, they couldn't match Peter Uihlein, who shot 62 after a six-hole stretch that included five birdies and an eagle. The former NCAA champion played the back nine in two-under 34, including four straight pars to finish his round and give himself at least a chance at a playoff.

He walked off the seventh green holding his putter, one hand on the grip, the other on the head, as if he wanted to break it in half. "The '97 Masters and the 2000 U.S. Open, I didn't miss one like that under 10 feet for the week", Woods said. "I missed a lot of fairways".

"It's just one of those weeks and I'm on to the next week, which is nice".

But that was an important putt.

"I'm on a hot streak right now", Woods said.
