Twitter to Its 336M Users: Change Your Password, NOW!

Twitter says its users should change their passwords which may have been exposed

"Out of an abundance of caution, we ask that you consider changing your password on all services where you've used this password".

The company is presenting users with a pop-up window that includes a message about the bug and a link to their Settings page where they can change the password.

The company declined to comment on when the bug was discovered, how long it had been storing passwords in this manner and how many passwords were affected.

If you are a Twitter user, change your password urgently.

The social network reports in a Thursday, May 3 blog post that the bug has been identified and fixed, and that its internal investigation shows no signs of breach or misuse.

It added that there was "no indication" that the details had been misused but warned users to update their login information as a precaution. Typically, when the user enters his or her password to log into Twitter, they are masked by hashing process (Twitter uses bcrypt), which replaces the text with a random string of characters.

The bug occurred prior to the hashing process and resulted in passwords being stored in a plain text log that Twitter discovered internally. These are used to confirm account credentials without revealing the actual password.

The thought is that your original password isn't ever presumed to be saved on Twitter's servers - but that's what happened in this case, the company stated.

Use strong passwords. Do not be predictable.

"I should not have said we didn't have to share".

Use difficult and hard-to-guess passwords. From there, tap the "Change password" option. While you are it, you should opt for the two-factor authentication since it is safer than just the password. This is the single best action you can take to increase your account security. For this reason, to make your accounts truly secure, you will likely need a password manager such as KeePass.
