CHARLOTTE, NC | Jason Day seizes control at Quail Hollow

Peterson's 2 eagles carries him to lead at Quail Hollow

Peter Uihlein is a stroke further back, having threatened to break the course record in Charlotte, North Carolina. He remained atop the leaderboard until midday through the round.

His 64 matches his lowest score since opening the 2016 Open with a 63 at Royal Troon (he shot 64 a year ago in the final round at the Greenbrier) and he did it without a bogey. McIlroy had to settle for a 66. He made just three birdies over the first 36 holes holes, shooting back-to-back 72s to start Saturday's round in 48th place. McIlroy made a move. With his bare feet in the stream and the ball on the bank well above his feet, he hit a full wedge to the back of the green for a two-putt par.

In a twist, it was actually last year's PGA, when Day finished tied for ninth, that convinced the Australian to put Quail Hollow back on his dance card. Tiger Woods and Uihlein both started their round at 2 over, and both found better fortune with the scoring conditions.

Woods might be in the featured pairing in the morning, but Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy, who tee off an hour later, will be the main event. He was nine shots behind. Save those last two holes, and he'd realistically be in contention for Sunday.

With his combination of power and the most statistically effective putting stroke on the PGA Tour this season, it's likely someone will have to chase down Day rather than have him back up.

Wise, the NCAA champion from OR two years ago, pulled his approach left of the 18th green. Instead, he tried a flop shot and his wedge slid under the ball for a whiff. He missed birdie putts of 24 feet and 40 feet on Nos.

"That was going to be a devastating hole", he said. "I didn't feel like I was really committed to shots, I didn't feel like I was really great".

Day is in charge, but not in the clear.

Uihlein, who is seeking his first PGA Tour win, didn't have much time to celebrate before being taken to be randomly drug tested. Watney hasn't won in almost six years.

Wise, 21, was only one behind Day with three holes to play but dropped shots at the 16th and 18th, where he chipped in from off the green for a bogey.

He was joined at at seven under by Bryson DeChambeau (66), Aaron Wise (70) and Paul Casey (69). McIlroy three-putted the 18th and still shot 5 under. He too started the day at 2 over but he fired a 9 under 62 today. That was probably a good thing.

"It was a bit of a struggle through eight holes", the former world number one told CBS television.

"I got lucky on that Saturday, that 65 was as good as I could have scored".

The final group of Day and Nick Watney go off at 1:35.

It was definitely moving day for some of the Tour players on Saturday.

Day said this shot wasn't that tough, even with his hands gripping down to the steel on a wedge.

"The biggest thing is that my short game has been spot on the last three days", Day said. And it worked out fine, just like the rest of his round.
