Once the Mets' ace, Matt Harvey will be designated for assignment

Mets to designate former All-Star Matt Harvey for assignment

Alderson added that the Harvey had a few hours to mull a decision over and discuss it with his agent but did not need much time. Think back to the surge of electricity when Harvey struck out 11 batters in 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut, or when he walked into the room as the National League's starting pitcher in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field. His ERA still stands at an unsightly 5.76 through seven games, including four starts, this season.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway said he and pitching coach Dave Eiland both feel like they are partly to blame for Harvey's situation.

Harvey has refused to go down to the minor leagues for an assignment and the team announced on Friday that they have designated the pitcher for assignment. If any team claims Harvey on waivers, he will be placed on its 40-man roster with the club having the option to put him in the minors or on the big-league team.

In recent years, the New York Mets have prided themselves on strong pitching. The 29-year-old has made four relief appearances since being removed from the rotation after his April 19 start against the Atlanta Braves. Harvey is on a short list with Chris Carpenter, Shaun Marcum and Jaime Garcia among pitchers who've had an elbow reconstruction and thoracic outlet syndrome over the past decade. The move to the bullpen was dramatic in itself. "At this point, pragmatism and realism far outweighed all other considerations", Alderson said.

It's all gone wrong for Harvey this season. A fresh start with a new organization could be exactly what Harvey needs. "Our job is to help every player in there, and it's not a good feeling when you can't".

Take the decline and add in Harvey's presence in the NY tabloids - be it for missing a game or, most recently, being spotted partying in Los Angeles - and his image as an underachiever is complete.

Harvey's velocity peaked at 96 miles per hour in 2015, and he logged a 2-0 record with a 3.04 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 26 2/3 postseason innings when the Mets advanced all the way to the World Series.

"Usually I get upset if a report is unexpected", Alderson told media, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. He drew a three-game suspension last season after he failed to show up for a game.
