Iowa Governor Signs Nation's Strictest Abortion Law

Iowa set to ban abortions after six weeks

Citing her faith, presumably Christianity, State Governor Kim Reynolds said the bill was "about life" and it was "immoral to stop an innocent beating heart".

The bill signing came shortly after the Iowa affiliates of Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union warned that they would sue the governor if she signed the bill, which the Republican-controlled Legislature approved during after-hours votes earlier in the week.

The fetal heartbeat bill has been a highly debated topic in the Iowa Legislation, with months of debate before getting passed by the Iowa House and Senate earlier this week.

The law bans most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is around six weeks of pregnancy.

Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said the heartbeat bill will "undoubtedly be challenged by the courts like other unconstitutional abortion bans before it".

"We may disagree, and we clearly do disagree, on this issue", Democratic Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell said, according to Fox.

The law becomes the most restrictive abortion measure in the country.

If a heartbeat is detected, the abortion would be prohibited except in cases involving medical emergency, rape, incest or fetal abnormalities deemed to be "incompatible" with life. "But if death is determined when a heart stops beating, then doesn't a beating heart indicate life?" "Instead, we will protect the fundamental right of Iowa women to control their bodies and their lives".

Abortion foes celebrated, hailing the legislation as the first step in potentially dismantling Roe v. Wade - the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that granted women the legal right to an abortion. "This is bigger than just a law".

Shumaker believes the near-total bans signal a strategic shift on the part of anti-abortion lawmakers, who have for years chipped away at abortion access through targeted regulation of abortion providers or "TRAP" laws.

"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back", Suzanna de Baca, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said in a statement. If one is found, the physician would not be able to perform an abortion.

Abortion rights activists rally outside the Supreme Court in March 2016 before justices heard arguments on a Texas law that would have severely restricted abortions in the state.

"We thank Iowa for recognizing that every life is a gift and that personhood has inherent dignity from the moment of conception", Mancini added.
