India to continue probe despite Cambridge Analytica closure

New Review for Third-Party Apps on Facebook

Reacting to the news, senior IT Ministry officials in New Delhi said the Indian Government will continue with its enquiry into the Cambridge Analytica data leak issue. The last date for the two companies to respond is May 10.

The firm had become the center of a maelstrom of controversy over the way it allegedly used Facebook data to manipulate voter opinion ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Cambridge Analytica said Wednesday that it's declaring bankruptcy and shutting down.

The former directors of Cambridge Analytica and its parent company SCL Group could still be personally charged with offences despite having shut down the companies, an MP has warned.

"Social media users don't expect to have their information given to third party developers without their knowledge", Shapiro said in a press release.

The Federal Trade Commission in the USA, meanwhile, also is investigating Facebook. Facebook has over 20 crore users in India.

"Despite Cambridge Analytica's unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully, which view is now fully supported by [the official's] report, the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company's customers and suppliers", the statement read. The firm was accused of improperly obtaining personal information on behalf of political clients.

Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm linked to President Trump's 2016 election campaign, harvested data from an estimated 87 million Facebook users.

According to the BBC, the British Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), a regulatory body concerned with privacy and data protection, said it would continue its investigation as well.

As authorities continue to investigate the use of the data of millions of people, here's a look at what the bankruptcy filings in the United Kingdom and US mean for the probe. "They are party to very serious investigations and those investigations can not be impeded by the closure of these companies", said MP Damian Collins. "We are continuing with our investigation in cooperation with the relevant authorities".

The company added that certain US affiliates, including the New York-based division hired in 2016 by then-candidate Donald Trump's campaign team, would be shutting down as well.

The company was able to amass the database quickly with the help of an app that appeared to be a personality test. One app, called ThisIsYourDigitalLife, collected data of not only users, but also of their Facebook friends.

One digital-rights advocate says criticisms of Facebook's privacy practices won't go away just because Cambridge Analytica has chose to close.
