Zuckerberg Announces Facebook Dating Feature at Developer Conference

Instagram Video Chat Goes Live In A Few Weeks

At Facebook's f8 developer conference today, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced an upcoming online dating feature.

The announcement sent the stock of Match Group, which owns properties such as Tinder, OkCupid, and Match.com, down 18 percent. And he pledged that Facebook would now put "people first" and adapt to evolving consumer expectations for the handling of their private information.

"This will be focused on long-term relationships, not just hookups", Zuckerberg said. Those include how much of the company's revenue comes from Myanmar and if there was any link between the USA elections and the 2017 purge of fake accounts.

Under the new feature, users will be able to create a separate "dating" profile not visible to their network of friends, with potential matches recommended based on dating preferences, points in common, and mutual acquaintances.

On Tuesday morning, Facebook also suddenly began offering users an option to flag every post in News Feeds and elsewhere as hate speech.

But Zuckerberg suggested that Facebook would not slow down and wouldn't distance itself from developers as it prioritizes data privacy.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn't going to let Facebook-related controversies like its repeated data privacy problems and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections ruin his hopefulness. "One of the things I'm most proud of is we've built the largest fully encrypted network in the world, and this would not have happened without Jan".

Tech companies are under intense scrutiny about how they protect customer data after Facebook was embroiled in a huge scandal where millions of users' data were improperly accessed by a political consultancy.

Facebook product chief Chris Cox explained "unlocking" in relation to a demo profile for a fake user named Jennifer: "Unlocking the event will mean she shares her dating profile with other people who are going to the event, are using the dating service, and also have unlocked it".

"When you're a Facebook user, and over time you became aware of a comparable service, then it's less likely that you will go on to Tinder", Mogharabi noted.

"This is how we are thinking about our responsibility: to keep people safe and to keep building", said Zuckerberg.

"I think the reaction is a combination of the Facebook news along with concerns that Match was getting toppy", or expensive, Kurnos told Reuters.

And yet, Zuckerberg admitted earlier in his speech that Facebook is not ideal and that the company "will make mistakes and they will have consequences and we will need to fix them". Users will also be able to opt out of having this data stored by apps and other third parties moving forward.

Facebook's only hardware announcement on Tuesday was about a virtual reality headset.
