Jason Witten plans to retire, join Monday Night Football

Jason Witten soon-to-be-former Cowboy

"[Witten] has some things to think about and discuss with his family from a professional perspective", Jones said, per Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed that he has had several meeting with Witten this week. Those players being South Dakota State's Dallas Goedert, Penn State's Mike Gesicki, Oklahoma's Mark Andrews and Indiana's Ian Thomas.

Witten was not available for immediate comment. A former third-round pick out of Tennessee in 2003, Witten is the Dallas Cowboys Franchise leader in catches and yards. The 35-year-old's 68 touchdown receptions only trails Dez Bryant (73) and Bob Hayes (71) in team history.

Witten said at the end of last season that he meant to continue playing, then reached an agreement in late March to restructure his contract.

Witten, who turns 36 on May 6, will have played 15 years in the NFL. But rest assured that I'm going to do everything in my power to help us be better as we move forward. Despite the rumors, Witten remained committed to the Cowboys.

With a career switch, Witten would be following in the footsteps of his former quarterback, Tony Romo, who made the move from the gridiron to the sideline past year for CBS to much fanfare and rave reviews.

ESPN reported Friday that Witten is planning to retire and join the network's "Monday Night Football" crew as lead analyst.

"Witten is averaging just nine yards per reception this season".

He also owns National Football League records for the most receptions in a single season by a tight end (110 in 2012) and most receptions in a single game by a tight end (18 in 2012).

After being inactive for all 16 games as a rookie and constantly finding himself in head coach featured Bruce Arians' doghouse, Humphries showed more in his second and third seasons. And Witten is the most accomplished of them all.

It was the first sign of Witten's legendary toughness. At the top of the positional group is stalwart tight end and forever starter Jason Witten.

"Forget 110 catches [in 2012], forget [the] Pro Bowl, forget all that stuff". I would not have come up with the retirement of Jason Witten. That's how you do it.
