Users can select exact tracks to listen to within these playlists, rather than being forced to rely on shuffle, and can skip as many times as they want.

Spotify is giving free tier members access to more songs in its massive catalog.

The new version of the app is being rolled out to iOS and Android users globally in the coming weeks. So when you search for a specific song you want to add to a playlist, Spotify's recommendation system will work behind the scenes to automatically recommend some more songs to add to that burgeoning collection of songs.

Spotify also announced today that its updated app will now be able to assist users discover songs.

Spotify said it has also engineered the new free service to take up 75 percent less mobile data to draw in users who have limits on their cellular packages.

Spotify has released a new version of the free, ad-supported version of its platform, Free on Spotify.

It operates using a "freemium" service model, meaning that its basic features are free with some restrictions and advertisements while additional services are available via paid subscription. Previously, users in the free tier were only allowed to shuffle songs that are part of playlists.

The new version of the app has a pared-down design that's meant to provide a far richer experience for free Spotify users. And with more than 2 billion social-media users in the world, he said, "Music is potentially bigger than social media networks".

Zafar added that Spotify will also offer a more personalized service to new free users from the moment they download the app.

In the wake of Spotify's recent IPO, you may think the company would focus mostly on their paid customers to boost revenue.

The move is Spotify's latest to fend off increasing competition from rival Apple Music, which announced earlier this month that it had reached 40 million paying subscribers.

But that's not necessarily the case from this week, as Spotify makes a few changes. The updated app includes more flexible access to the Spotify catalog of tracks, with more on-demand control, along with a way to potentially save considerably on how much data your phone is using. "This is the beginning of an evolution for Spotify and we will continue to make improvements that mirror our customers' needs". We're told that the other playlists will change depending on the music tastes of the listener.
