Reporters without Borders: FYROM ranks 109th for the freedom of media

JUST IN: NGO Reporters Without Borders upgrades Hong Kong's press freedom rating, citing 'organised resistance'

Kosovo's level of media freedom was ranked 78th out of 180 countries in theReporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index 2018, an improvement of four places since 2017.

Nevertheless, some democracies in the region have been resisting, RSF said.

However, Reporters Without Borders, an global NGO working to mobilize support for freedom of the media and challenge governments and legislation that suppress it, did not provide a wholly positive reflection on progress of press freedom in Kosovo.

In Europe, the region where press freedom is the safest, the regional indicator worsened most this year - shaken by the murder of journalists in Malta and Slovakia. "Political leaders who fuel loathing for reporters... undermine the concept of public debate based on facts instead of propaganda".

In the ranking, Reporters Without Borders warned that growing animosity towards journalists across the world was being encouraged by both authoritarian and democratically elected political leaders.

"To dispute the legitimacy of journalism today is to play with extremely risky political fire".

"The unleashing of hatred towards journalists is unsafe and a threat to democracy", RSF chief Christophe Deloire told AFP.

The report outlined some improvement in relations between the media and the new government formed in September 2017, noting that "the current government nonetheless seems readier to talk with journalists and the media as a whole, unlike the two previous governments, which were much less open to dialogue".

"North Asia's democracies are struggling to defend their models against an all-powerful China that shamelessly exports its methods for silencing all criticism", RSF said in an analysis of the latest press freedom index.

As usual, Scandinavian countries topped the list with Norway deemed as having the world's freest press for the second year in a row.

Britain has a worse record on press freedom than any other western European nation apart from Italy, according to an influential report.

India, likewise, has fallen from 136th to 138th on the index.

In East Asia, South Korea has moved from 63rd to 43rd on the index.

A new threat mentioned in the report is cyber-related. The journalist group says this is due to insufficient discussion on the country's state secrecy law.
