Syracuse Suspends Theta Tau Fraternity, Accused Of Exhibiting Racist Behavior

Tau fraternity house in Syracuse N.Y. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud announced the fraternity was suspended over videos with racist sexist content. Syverud described the video invol

Over the weekend, the 18 men depicted in the video have been removed from academic participation.

After a private vulgar video from a fraternity landed in the laps of officials, current Theta Tau brothers face the same fate as their predecessors; expulsion from the university.

Watch the updates below.

Chancellor Kent Syverud posted a video, calling the fraternity's video "extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist and hostile to people with disabilities".

The video also shows members simulating sexual acts and mocking gay people.

The first video, released by the school's independent student newspaper last week, showed racist behavior that the fraternity tried to play off as satire.

.

"We know this issue extends beyond one fraternity and one video", Syverud said, adding that the university has "begun a top-to-bottom review of our entire Greek system".

Now many at the university are outraged over a new video published by The Daily Orange.

"Yankee is totally unaware of this light rape that's occurring", the video continues.

While the Theta Tau fraternity has been expelled, punishments for the 18 students are still to be determined. Syverud said the expulsion followed "immediate action" taken by the university within two hours of receiving and authenticating the video.

Sophmore Priya Penner said she hopes the school will expel the students involved.

Amid ongoing investigations, the fraternity chapter insist that the video was meant to be "satirical" and that they were deliberately acting like an intolerant person for the goal of the "sketch".

"This video is just a example, one example of what we deal with as marginalized folks... Some people do not want to be known as disabled, or might prefer only to be called Joe, who happens to have a disability, but disability is not the entirety, let alone the center of Joe's life".

Theta Tau issued a statement on Friday apologizing for the content, and said the video was part of a new member initiation "satirical sketch".
