Romney Loses Utah GOP Convention, Derailing Senate Coronation

Mitt Romney Confronts Senate Run off in Utah

Karl Rove offers his take.

Mitt Romney failed to win the Utah Republican nomination for the open U.S. Senate seat Saturday and will now compete in the June primary.

In the final round of voting at the Republican party's convention, Romney had won only 49.12 per cent of the votes, the Hill reports.

Romney was narrowly defeated at Saturday's Republican state convention, receiving 49 percent of the vote to state Representative Mike Kennedy 51 percent.

In remarks following the vote, Romney retained an optimistic tone.

'I'm delighted with the outcome. "On to, essential major forward. And I hope to be able to get the job done for the people of Utah". Kennedy reported an outlay of $31,500.

"I'm a candidate with a compelling life story and a singular set of life circumstances I'd like to make use of to serve the individuals of Utah", he informed FOX 13.

Saturday's tradition lasted longer than 8 months, primarily due to jelqing over policies, that the Salt Lake Tribune noted.

The delegates on the conference are usually extra conservative than Utah's common voters, the newspaper famous.

Romney, who ran against former President Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election, failed to gather the 60 percent of votes from delegates at the Utah Republican Convention necessary to clinch an outright nomination to replace retiring seven-term Sen. A lot of them have been political newcomers who questioned Romney's criticism of President Donald Trump and the depth of his ties to Utah.

Romney pushed back against critics who said he's an interloper in Utah politics by referring to his role in staging the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.

After the 2016 presidential election saw a groundswell of support for political outsiders on both sides with Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders' campaigns, it has not been easy for mainstream candidates to push through.

At the convention, Mr. Romney faced 11 other candidates, mostly political newcomers who questioned his criticism of President Trump and the depth of his ties to Utah. However the two males have proven contemporary indicators of burying the hatchet, and Romney has accepted Trump's endorsement.
