National Archives Could Help Windrush Generation Prove They're Allowed To Stay

Jamaican immigrants being welcomed by RAF officials in 1948

Mr Ellis, who lives near the Oval cricket ground in Stockwell, is now planning to take his application back to the Home Office, which has set up a dedicated helpline to deal with such cases and is currently looking at almost 300. The chorus of criticism threatens to exacerbate tensions between...

The episode has raised concerns about whether the Home Office can fairly handle the claims of European Union residents after Brexit, when thousands of European Union citizens will need to show they have the right to remain in Britain.

"On a policy level, it has raised serious questions about the capacity of the Home Office to cope with the tremendous task of managing European Union migrants after Brexit, and will undoubtedly encourage a much closer level of scrutiny in any unfavorable decisions taken as part of that process", said Gaston.

Theresa May is facing increasing pressure over her "knee-jerk" approach to immigration and her handling of the Windrush scandal in a development that threatens to overshadow the final day of the Commonwealth summit.

The Labour MP David Lammy has said the decision to destroy the archive was "no accident".

But there were further calls for action at an emotional meeting of the Windrush generation and their descendants in Parliament on Thursday evening.

Their problems include difficulties when finding work, getting NHS care, accessing benefits, or trying to secure housing, as they do not have the correct documentation to prove they are entitled to live in the UK. Then the Home Office passed the buck to a 2010 decision by the UK Border Agency.

Barbados high commissioner (ambassador) Guy Hewitt told the BBC that some "Windrush Kids" were being treated as illegal immigrants even though they had gone to school in Britain and paid their taxes.

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said Home Secretary Amber Rudd should take responsibility for what had happened.

Thousands of landing card slips recording the arrival of Windrush-era immigrants were destroyed by the Home Office in 2009 and now having never applied for British citizenship or passports, members of the Windrush generation are now struggling to prove they are here legally.

Former NHS nurse Icilda Williams, who moved back to Jamaica in 1996 after 34 years in Bradford, said her annual visits to the United Kingdom to see her children had been halted since 2014 after she was denied a visa.

It has been suggested by some that compensation should be paid to those caught up in the row. "Today it has 53", she said.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove told Sky News the Government has "moved very quickly to deal with this situation", adding that Ms Rudd is "humane and determined and wants to ensure that we do the right thing".

Speaking about the database destruction, Sir Bob Kerslake, the former head of the civil service, said some government ministers described May's tenure at the Home Office as being "almost reminiscent of Nazi Germany".

In 2012 May said: "The aim is to create here in Britain a really hostile environment for illegal migration".

Mr Gove, who held a number of Cabinet positions during the period, said he did not "recollect any such conversation of the kind that he refers to during that time". Sky News would like to hear from you.
