European Union rejects British proposals for post-Brexit Irish border

EU 'annihilates' Theresa May's plan to avoid hard Irish border

The EU has rejected their proposals on the Irish question because their proposals were fantasy with no basis in reality or in worldwide law.

There are three ways this could happen: either the United Kingdom actually retains membership of the single market and customs union (which May has always ruled out), some kind of technological solutions are found to address the specific problems in Ireland, or that Northern Ireland remains part of the single market while the rest of the United Kingdom leaves.

The government's approach to the Irish border issue is "misguided and fails to recognise numerous central concerns about food", the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has said.

According to news reports, European Union negotiators have rejected as unworkable both of Britain's proposals to keep trade frictionless after Brexit, a "customs partnership" and a "streamlined customs arrangement".

The UK has in the past rejected plans to keep the North in the customs union.

Britain last month rejected the EU's language on the Border in a draft withdrawal agreement because it claims it only partially reflects the joint report agreed between the two sides last December.

The EU's chief negotiator has said there is still a "risk of failure" in the Brexit negotiations as Brussels again rejected the UK's proposals to avoid a hard border in Ireland.

MPs are pushing for a vote in the Commons next week on remaining in some form of customs union after the government was defeated on the issue in the Lords on Wednesday.

Britain was proposing a new "streamlined customs partnership" that involved "regulatory equivalence" on both sides of the border, with the option for future "divergence" - something that the European Union has rejected as unworkable.

The "Irish question" of how Britain can balance an open Irish border while pulling Northern Ireland from the customs union and single market increasingly appears to be the one issue which could bring the Brexit process screeching to a halt.

So far, however, May's government has not budged, insisting that it will be able to come up with an acceptable solution for the Northern Ireland border, anchored in a new customs deal. The UK government said that this would enable "around 80 percent of small businesses to operate with no new requirements in relation to customs processes".

In Brussels, EU negotiators are largely taking a wait-and-see approach, hoping that the British side ultimately gives ground and concedes that a future customs union is in Britain's own economic self-interest.

The door to the European Union is now closed to Britain and Europeans should not accept any attempt to reverse Brexit, former French President Francois Hollande warned in an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph published on Thursday.
