Starbucks to Close all US Stores on May 29

The area of Philadelphia where two men were arrested while waiting at a Starbucks last week has what the American Civil Liberties Union calls

Starbucks is planning to follow up on its CEO's promise to implement "unconscious bias" training by closing more than 8,000 company-owned stores across the US on May 29 to conduct "racial bias training", per a Starbucks news release.

The company will train almost 175,000 employees across the country, Starbucks said.

The 911 call that brought police to a Starbucks in Philadelphia, resulting in the arrest of two African-American customers, lasted only seconds.

Representatives for the two men could not immediately be reached. The incident illustrated the bias that can affect even the most normal activities such as meeting someone for coffee in the USA public spaces. Starbucks has confirmed that the employee who made the call has been terminated.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome in our store on Thursday were reprehensible. they were wrong", Johnson told ABC's Good Morning America on Monday, amid protests and calls for a boycott on social media.

To combat this situation, Starbucks Corp is planning to close down 8,000 company-owned USA cafes for the afternoon on May 29. "That's not who Starbucks is". Starbucks will spend that afternoon educating their employees about #Racial Bias. Yaffee arrived as the officers put the men, who were not being disruptive or confrontational, in handcuffs for trespassing.

Johnson also reportedly apologized to the two unnamed black men who were arrested and assured that he's making changes to deal with the problem of racism in the company. The two men entered the store and asked to use a restroom and an employee refused the request because the men had not purchased anything.

The closures cost the company an estimated $6 million, according to Schultz's 2011 book "Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul".

However, the department also released several minutes of communications between the dispatcher and responding officers, and in those, you hear the dispatcher ambiguously report that there's "a group of males" inside that location "causing a disturbance". But by this time, the video of the Black men's apprehension had already gone viral nationwide.

Philadelphia Police late on Tuesday released the series of calls that led to their arrests.
