Kendrick Lamar Wins 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Music

Kendrick Lamar performs during the Festival d'ete de Quebec in Quebec City

Kendrick Lamar may have lost out on the best album Grammy for his acclaimed album Damn, but the hip-hop artist's landmark album has just landed a far more esteemed prize: a Pulitzer.

Lamar, 30, won the Pulitzer for his 20 17 record "DAMN." also was the music victor in the Pulitzers' record to come from outside this sphere of classical or jazz. BBC.com quotes the organisers as saying that Kendrick's album offered "affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".

Over the years, Lamar has been praised and lauded for the diversity in his music.

"The time was right", Dana Canedy, the administrator of the prizes, said in an interview after the winners were announced. It means that the jury and the board judging system worked as it's supposed to - the best work was awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

Lamar was first born and raised at the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, hip hop pioneers' house NWA, and commenced making music.

Pulitzer audio winners include jazz musicians Wynton Marsalis and Ornette Coleman.

Lamar has not commented publicly about his newest honor.

According to Canedy, the decision to award the prize to Lamar unanimous.

The Loyalty hitmaker has won a string of top awards for the record, including a Grammy for Best Rap Album, and now he can add the prestigious accolade to his collection. Many of his songs highlight issues he has faced, such as racism, life on the streets, self-love, police brutality and survival.
