Harley Quinn Spinoff Movie Finds Director in Cathy Yan

Suicide Squad Harley Quinn

She will be the first Asian American woman to direct a superhero film. The film is expected to be based on the "Birds of Prey" comics storyline and feature numerous female characters from the DC universe teaming up with Robbie's Harley.

Filmmaker Cathy Yan has reportedly signed on to direct Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn spin-off.

Namely Gal Godot as Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins who directed the film of the same name which has been a massive success, and Margot Robbie's outstanding performance as Harley Quinn as one of the few positives of Suicide Squad. Beyond that, she's mostly worked on short films as a producer and writer. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and just got hired to write the Batgirl movie.

The announcement solidified Yan as the third woman, and second woman of color to direct a film in the DC Extended Universe. Suicide Squad 2, directed by Gavin O'Connor, is supposedly on the way. The actress reportedly took an interest in the Birds of Prey project since she began to research her character for her role in Suicide Squad.

Meanwhile, Leto will also reportedly reprise his role as The Joker in the Harley Quinn spin-off, and previous year he opened up about working with Margot.

This is a bold bet for Warner Bros' Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada, who oversee DC under Toby Emmerich. DC previously tapped Ava DuVernay to direct "New Gods", which is still in development. DC isn't just investing in its female superheroes, but they're investing in female creators to tell their stories, and that's crucial for getting more women in front of and behind the camera.

After studying drama at Somerset College in Queensland, Robbie started acting in independent films in Australia starting in 2008 and also became a cast member of the popular soap opera Neighbours later that year, appearing on the show until 2011.
