Erdoğan and Putin discuss Syria crisis in phone call, seek solution

Turkish economy

"We are extremely anxious that some countries confident of their military power are turning Syria into a scene for arm wrestling", Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara after Washington and Moscow traded accusations.

The call comes in the evening of the day (Wednesday, April 11) when Donald Trump warned of an imminent Western response to the alleged chemical bombing in Syria, leading the tension with Russian Federation to its peak since the beginning of this crisis.

Ankara appears keen to keep its distance from one of the worst outbreaks of tensions since the Cold War between its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Washington and increasingly close partner Moscow.

Ankara appears keen to keep its distance from one of the worst outbreaks of tensions since the cold war between its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Washington and increasingly close partner Moscow.

Yet Turkey has also worked closely in the last months with Russian Federation and Assad's other main ally Iran in a bid to bring peace to Syria. Trump also blamed Moscow for being partners with "a gas killing animal", referring to Syria's Bashar al-Assad.

Last week, Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani were hosted by Erdogan in Ankara for a tripartite summit to discuss the Syrian conflict.

When asked if Turkey will support possible military action by the US against the Assad regime in response to the Douma attack, Aksoy said Turkey "continues to monitor the process closely".

"Assad regime must leave Syria and a change in the political process must start as soon as possible, " Cavusoglu said.

The current situation in the Kurdish-dominated Syrian city of Afrin remains quite tense since it went under the full control of the Turkish military forces in late March as a result of its military offensive in the area dubbed Olive Branch. Until the end, we will fight against both these mistakes.
