1 soldier, 4 civilians killed in anti-terror operation in Kashmir

Encounter underway in Kulgam

At least four men were killed in Kashmir when government forces fired on anti-India protesters who thronged a village where soldiers battled a group of militants, officials said Wednesday.

Local residents started pelting security personnel with stones, leading to clashes in which around 20 civilians were also injured, they said. A security force officer said the militants managed to escape from the hideout. Two other security personnel were also injured. "After conducting thorough search of the debris and nearby areas, we could not recover the bodies of the militants", official sources told UNI. But there was no trace of the militants, who appeared to have escaped in the clashes between civilians and security forces. Authorities said that two-three terrorists were trapped during the gunbattle. Four of them, identified as 16-year-old Bilal Ahmad Tantray, 28-year-old Sharjeel Ahmad Sheikh, 14-year-old Faisal Illahi and 30-year-old Aijaz Ahmad Palla, succumbed to injuries on way to or in hospitals.

Sada Gunakara Rao was 24 years in age and had joined the Army in 2012. Another civilian is seriously injured.

They said security forces blasted the house from where the militants were firing at them following which the firing stopped.

The latest civilian killings has added to the tensions prevailing in Kashmir following last weekend's violence in which five civilians and 13 militants were killed by security forces.

Meanwhile, soon after the news of youth killings came into light protests erupted in several parts of Kashmir Valley including in Sopore, Kashmir University and other parts of South Kashmir.

One jawan and three civilians have lost their lives in the encounter till now. According to reports, train services have also been hit.
