Saffron statue of Ambedkar in UP painted blue

Two-time former BSP MLA from Dataganj in Badaun, Sinod Shakya, said, "After painting many buildings saffron across the state, the government now wants to saffronise Ambedkar statues, which is unacceptable".

Gautam evaded a reporter's question about why he had repainted the statue when villagers did not object to its colour.

Earlier, some officials had claimed the statue was re-painted by the administration. "Today, the statue has been repainted in blue".

The statue was rebuilt in the presence of district police officers, but controversy erupted when people noticed that the colour of the statue was saffron.

In the past too, the government has been criticised by the opposition for imposing saffron colour.

The statues of Ambedkar are usually in black or blue coat dress across the country.

A new statue was requisitioned from Agra and re-installed at the site the next day.

According to reports, a statue of Dr Ambedkar was vandalised on Friday night in Dugraiyya village in the district and the district officials promised to replace the statue.

"When Babasaheb embraced Buddhism his dress was of saffron colour".

Asked about the saffron hue, the SDM said, "the committee members had brought blue paint along, but the statue was installed before giving it a blue coat". They alleged that an attempt was being made to saffronise Dr Ambedkar. A probe was ordered into the incident and cases filed against unidentified persons. On April 7, the statue at Ambedkar park in Kuwargaav was found damaged.

Superintendent of Police Kamal Kishore said the police covered the vandalised statue with cloth and started a probe into the incident.
