Girls Jump From Balcony to Escape as Fire Engulfs Dance Studio

Watch Video: Young girls jumping down a dance studio in New Jersey as fire tear through

A group of young girls and at least one adult were huddled screaming on a second-floor balcony above a auto wash while flames raged out the windows just a few feet behind them, according to a short video posted to the Facebook group Life in Edgewater and later on YouTube.

"Oh my god, the girls was so scared, crying and screaming", said Nehmi. It became very clear, very fast, that the ladders were not tall enough, so bystanders told the children to jump into their waiting arms. The fire happened around 7 p.m. Monday at a multiuse building in Edgewater.

McPartland told reporters: "It was one of the bravest things I've seen".

New York Daily News reported that the fire is believed to have started on the building's first floor, the home of a vehicle fix workshop, before it spread to consume the entire building. "I didn't know it [was] gonna be that bad". He was the first person on the scene, and said he saw two girls pounding on the glass on the second floor. "I didn't realize there was so much chaos", she says. He said he called for help and that he and his friends tried to help the girls get out by putting a ladder up to the balcony and catching the girls on the ground after they jumped. But others could not reach the ladder and started to drop to the ground, desperate to escape.

The building housed a restaurant, dance studio, vehicle wash and auto body shop.

Five people were sent to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries while 10-15 more suffered minor injuries.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
