Uber buys on-demand bike-sharing firm Jump

Samuel Aponte

It has earlier raised $11.6 million funding to date. "As our new CEO has said, it is appropriate to regulate services such as Uber and so we will continue the dialogue with cities across Europe".

It's a big day for Uber, as a new acquisition will see it branch out from the ride sharing service that made it a popular name.

"Our ultimate goal is one we share with cities around the world: making it easier to live without owning a personal vehicle". I wondered if you could build a lower-cost system that delivered a better user experience by taking the tech out of the docking station and putting it on the bikes themselves.

Again, this was a matter of Uber's status as a transportation company, rather than an "information society service", coming back to bite it.

Under Khosrowshahi, that vision has taken off.

Careem on the other hand launched a scooter service recently and also has arrangements with some white taxis. Express Pool bears obvious similarities to a bus, but with greater flexibility than existing public transit routes.

Ride-hailing giant Uber is buying the e-bike startup JUMP Bikes, adding bike-share to its transportation options.

Our 10-year "Overnight Success" Story.

. Originally founded as a bike retailer in 2010 by Ryan Rzepecki, the New York City-based company is now considering a major European expansion a year after transitioning to B2C rentals, with Mr. Rzepecki - also its CEO - suggesting that the firm will be rolling out its service in many more markets starting next year.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshani said on Twitter that many employees at Uber were "super passionate about the (Jump) product".

"Our ultimate goal is ... making it easier to live without owning a personal auto".

At the same time, the move into dockless bikes could reenforce skepticism from opponents who say un-docked bikes clutter city streets and sidewalks, and encourage theft and vandalism. This is proof that JUMP e-bikes allow you to go farther, faster, and have more fun. Pedal-assist bikes will now be allowed, but more powerful e-bikes that can reach speeds over 20 miles per hour will still be forbidden. "We've got to think it through".

Last month, ride-hailing startup Grab announced it would integrate Uber's ride-sharing and food delivery business in the region into its platform, making it the largest such service in Southeast Asia.

Fewer people are driving public transportation in the U.S., as stated by research, even since commuters shift to ride-hailing solutions such as Uber and Lyft. Our pilot of JUMP bikes in San Francisco is off to a very strong start, with thousands of trips by riders who always have smiles on their faces as they cruise up hills-and past people riding conventional bikes - I nearly felt guilty riding mine.

But under the new leadership of Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, whom Rzepecki says leads with humility, "we realized that we shared Uber's vision of multi-modal mobility and had the same goal of decreasing auto ownership".
