Teenage girl killed and boy injured in separate shootings in London

London murder rate now beats New York after surge of stabbings

The monthly murder rate in London has overtaken that of NY for the first time in modern history, according to official figures.

So far in 2018, the Met Police has investigated 46 murders, with officers in the Big Apple taking on 50 cases, however, in February and March, London crime rates have sky-rocketed.

Data from police in both cities, obtained by The Sunday Times and the BBC, shows 15 people were murdered in the capital in February, compared to 14 in NY.

Including January's figures, there have still been more murders in NY, which has a similar-sized population to London, but British politicians and police are increasingly expressing concern about the higher United Kingdom numbers, driven by a surge in knife crime.

The shootings come amid concerns over rising violent crime in the capital.

A rise in knife crime has seen London overtake New York's murder rate.

"New York has been able to bring down serious violence through a public health approach", she said. We need a proper strategy that looks at all the issues.

Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said on Tuesday: "there can be no place in our society for violent crime".

"There are so many drugs, stabbings, and killings", she added. Two people have since been charged with Balbir Johal's death, which marked a spike in such attacks.

London police investigated more murders than NY over the last two months, statistics show, as the mayor's office condemned a "violent scourge" on the city's streets after another weekend of bloodshed. We will not police our way out of this problem.

"A 17-year-old girl died after she was found with gunshot wounds in Tottenham", the police said in a statement.
