Queen's husband Prince Philip hospitalized for hip surgery

Prince Philip

TheDaily Mail reported on Tuesday that Philip, 96, is to undergo hip surgery on Wednesday.

Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth's husband, Prince Philip, has been admitted to the hospital for a previously scheduled hip surgery.

Philip is said to have complained of a problem with his hip which caused him to miss a Windsor Castle event with the Queen last week. Prince Andrew inherited the role directly from his father, who had been Colonel of the Granadier Guards since 1975.

Before resigning his position as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards at the end of past year, Prince Philip officially retired from his public life earlier in 2017.

The queen missed a traditional Christmas church service in late 2016 for the first time in decades due to a heavy cold and was hospitalized in March 2013 with symptoms of gastroenteritis.

The Duke, who is the longest-serving consort in British history, has not been in good health in recent times. Last November, royal expert Kate Nicholl told ET that Prince Harry's special bond with his grandfather is behind both the timing and venue for his upcoming nuptials.

According to Buckingham Palace, that two-day stint in the hospital was the result of an infection related to an unnamed "pre-existing condition".

His final solo engagement was in August a year ago, when he reviewed a parade of Royal Marines outside Buckingham Palace in his capacity as Captain General of the corps. The royal couple has been married for 70 years.

Philip, or the Duke of Edinburgh as he is known in Britain, retired from public life last August, quipping at the time that he was no longer able to "stand up much".
