Tom Watson calls on Labour official to quit NEC over anti-Semitism row

Jewish community members have accused opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn of taking a

While friction between Jewish advocacy groups and Corbyn has existed nearly since the start of his reign, the latest confrontation began when a 6-year-old Facebook posting was brought to public attention last month by a Labour Party lawmaker who is Jewish.

Speaking to the Jewish News after this week's row, he said: "I did say that processes in our party had to be speeded up and that all of the recommendations of the Chakrabarti report had to be carried out so that we could address the issue".

Eddie Izzard said a "stain of anti-Semitism must be removed" in his first official statement after being appointed to Labour's national executive committee.

John Mann, chairman of the all-party group against anti-Semitism, said the use of Nazi comparators was "demeaning, unwarranted and dangerous".

The Sunday Times reported to have uncovered more than 2,000 messages in the groups, which numbered 400,000 members, including anti-Semitism and mysogyny, as well as threats of violence and Holocaust denial.

The revelations come just days after Corbyn admitted more than 300 allegations of anti-Semitism within his party have been investigated since he became Labour leader.

Christine Shawcroft, the former-chair of Labour's disputes panel, also resigned from the party's ruling committee. Some party members have even been accused of denying the holocaust.

Mr Garrard, who has donated £1.5 million (7.7m dirham) to Labour since 2003, reportedly said: "I have watched with dismay and foreboding the manner in which the leadership has, in my view, over the last two years, conducted itself".

Corbyn has sought to try and get hold of the anti-Semitism scandal engulfing his party after a demonstration outside Parliament over his handling of it. Corbyn maintains the party has "zero tolerance" for anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination.

"On the contrary, I have been witnessing, since Mr Corbyn became leader, a philosophical and a political policy which espouses, in almost every respect, the very antithesis of the great party under whose reputation, and under whose flag, it now seeks to fly and where so many other Jews were once so proud to stand".

"It is fine when you hear two or three cases a year".

Corbyn had been enjoying a relative lull after an nearly constant media spotlight on cases of alleged anti-Semitism within Labour's ranks through 2016 and 2017. "It doesn't work if we're suspending several people a week", said one party veteran.
