Google Shutting Down goo.gl URL Shortener Next Year

Google Ending URL Shortener Support In Favor Of Dynamic Links

All you had to do was to append.info to any goo.gl link to display click statistics for any link.

Starting April 13th, you will not be able to create new goo.gl short links, though existing users can manage the links via the goo.gl console for the next year. But existing users will be able to use it for another year after which it will discontinue exclusively.

The goo.gl states "Starting March 30, 2018, we will be turning down support for goo.gl URL shortener".

In a new blog post, Google has announced that it's shuttering its goo.gl URL shortening service on March 30, 2019, paving the way for developers to shift their focus to its Firebase Dynamic Links API. There are a number of fantastic alternatives available, though, including Bitly and TinyURL.

Google also made it clear that developers who have integrated Google URL shortening service with various apps till today would be able to create short URLs beyond May 30, 2018, albeit with a small change.

Google has made a decision to terminate its URL shortening service, called goo.gl or Google URL Shortener. "Previously created links will continue to redirect to their intended destination". Which sounds more useful for developers over regular internet goers.

Google's URL shortening service worked similarly to others; users could paste any URL into a form on the Google URL Shortener website to turn it into a shorter URL that was easier to share or publish. Fortunately, existing links will continue to work. They survive the app install process, so even new users see the content they're looking for when they open the app for the first time. Now you might not have heard of this tool but we are sure you have encountered it once or maybe more.

What do you think of Google's move?

Extensions and services started to appear to reveal the actual link target of shortened URLs.
