Masters of the Universe Infighting: Apple CEO Tim Cook Takes On Zuckerberg

Apple CEO on Facebook Data Leak: 'I Wouldn't Be in This Situation'

Cook told Swisher that Apple could theoretically "make a ton of money if we monetised our customer, if our customer was our product. We've elected not to do that", he said.

Cook said Wednesday in an interview with tech news site Recode and MSNBC that Apple is "not going to traffic in your personal life", a dig at rival companies that collect and share vast troves of personal information that he called "an invasion of privacy".

Echoing remarks he made in Beijing last week, Cook went so far as to advocate regulation of Facebook.

Cook said in no uncertain terms that Facebook could not adequately monitor itself in terms of privacy: "I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation". "However, I think we're beyond that here". It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America.

Playboy is leaving Facebook, for good, it says, with the social giant's latest user-privacy scandal the straw that broke the camel's back for the media company.

Cook feels this sort of data collection is a result of Facebook treating their users as the product instead of the customer. Shares in Facebook plummeted more than 17pc from the close on 16 March to 20 March.

"I think it's an invasion of privacy. This is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press", Cook said.

"As such, Mr Zuckerberg has personally asked one of his deputies to make themselves available".

The reason, according to the 57-year-old exec, is because Apple's business is fundamentally different from the ad-driven juggernaut built by the social network. A 72-hour window to allow his statement to circulate wide enough to reach everybody.

If you haven't been following the situation, here's a quick recap of events to date: Facebook is in hot water with users and lawmakers after it was discovered that Cambridge Analytica managed to improperly obtain the data of around 50 million Facebook users, and may have shared that information with Donald's Trump 2016 presidential campaign.

On Friday, another Silicon Valley CEO, Elon Musk, deleted the Facebook pages of two of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.

Facebook is in crisis.
