GoPro Introduces Entry-Level Hero Camera for $199

GoPro Hero 2018

Camera Jabber's action camera expert Ali Jennings happened to be in the shop picking up another piece of equipment when he spotted the new entry-level GoPro Hero camera sitting on a shelf next to the Hero5 Black.

GoPro has launched a new action cam and the headline news is that it'll be its cheapest camera yet.

The new Hero is not meant to replace the Hero 5 Session; GoPro will keep selling that small, cube-shaped camera for now. The latter lack true built-in displays, and instead rely on a paired smartphone for both viewing video and accessing some of their more advanced controls and settings.

"HERO is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture", says Meghan Laffey, GoPro's SVP of Product. But the new Hero has been simplified and abridged to make it easier to use and to bring the price way down.

New GoPro Hero could save buyers money but not the company

After doing a double take, he asked the staff if this was the new entry-level GoPro Hero camera with a £199 price tag.

The Hero will shoot high definition video at a maximum of 1440p at 60 fps as well as capturing 1080p HD footage at 60 fps.

GoPro's other cameras include the $399 Hero6 Black, the $299 Hero5 Black and the Fusion 360-camera priced at $699. It also shoots 10-megapixel stills and has an electronic video stabilization system. According to GoPro, "cloud backup, damaged camera replacement, 20-percent off accessory discounts and more are included with a PLUS subscription for just $4.99 a month, cancellable anytime". The firm's revenue was down 38.1% compared to the same quarter last year. equities analysts predict that GoPro will post -0.62 EPS for the current year.
