Self-driving Uber auto kills USA woman

Self-Driving Uber Car Crashes In Arizona — Kills Pedestrian

The woman, identified as 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, was struck as she walked her bicycle across the street. Uber's autonomous vehicles have had previous self-driving accidents, and the company was never held liable.

Uber tweeted that it is cooperating with police investigating the incident. The companies say the cars will be safer than regular cars simply because they take easily distracted humans out of the driving equation.

As a response to the incident, Uber suspended all further testing of autonomous vehicles and promised its full cooperation and assistance in the investigation of the accident.

South Korea said it was aware of the Uber incident and that it makes "frequent improvements to the permit system and could make changes in light of the incident going forward". Decisions on any possible charges will be made by the Maricopa County Attorney's office.

He said that impairment did not initially appear to be a factor for either Vasquez or Herzberg.

The Ontario government has allowed self driving cars on roads since 2016 as part of a testing program, which is supposed to continue until the year 2026. Self-driving cars have been involved in minor accidents, according to reports filed with regulators.

Sensors on self-driving cars - which may include laser-based technology, radar and video - are created to sense pedestrians and other obstructions even in the dark.

"Arizona has been the wild west of robot auto testing with virtually no regulations in place", said Consumer Watchdog, a non-profit consumer advocacy group, in a statement. With the right testing and technology, self-driving cars could still join their ranks.

A "transition period" to fully autonomous cars operating safely on the roads could take several more decades, said Jenifer Baxter, head of engineering at the IMechE. Last week, a self-driving Uber crashed with another vehicle in Pittsburgh, local news reported.

Jason Levine, executive director, Center for Auto Safety, a USA advocacy group, predicted that the accident would set consumer confidence in driverless technology back by years "if not decades". On March 1, following questions about the lax rules and the possibility of no-backup-driver testing, Ducey issued a new executive order with slightly more stringent requirements.

The technology has widely been seen as almost ready for primetime despite earlier incidents, such as the death of a Tesla driver who was relying on the system's Autopilot system before he got decapitated running under a semi-truck on a Florida highway.
