Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has replaced Syed Ali Geelani as interim chairman of Tehreek-i-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
Sehrai, a Jamaat-e-Islami ideologue, has been a closest aide and friend of Geelani for around 50 years.
A confidant of Geelani, Sehrai will be elected as the next chairman of the TeH when the elections to the post are held later this year.
Geelani had cited health reasons as he offered to step down.
"So today I willfully step-down from the chairmanship, and advise the shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest". He extended his fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization.
There were many contenders, including his son Naeem Geelani, Democratic Freedom Party head Shabir Shah and Muslim League chairman Masarat Alam, who were tipped to succeed Mr. Geelani as the TeH's chairman. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is our party and Hurriyat has 23 allies.
Sehraie did not attend many executive council meetings of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and the Hurriyat as well. Last Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against Kashmiri separatists leader in the alleged terror funding case in a Delhi court. They are now detained in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. The separatist leader has also served as the president of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organisation fo separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
He is credited to have worked as a "foot soldier" in JeI in the trying times. He served at this position for 18 years.
When JeI J&K chose to launch its student wing, Sehraie was chosen to lead Shooba-i-Talaba since 1977.
