Donald Trump: 'Terrible' Austin Bombings 'Very, Very Sick'

Police in Austin Texas are investigating a series of deadly bombings in recent weeksMore

Earlier Tuesday, a package exploded on a conveyor belt at a FedEx shipping center in Schertz, northeast of San Antonio, injuring a worker.

Until now, the spate of blasts that began in early March had been contained to Austin, the state capital with a population of almost one million where two people were killed and several more injured. Local police said, through a statement posted on Facebook, that "the explosion came from a package in the sorting area of the facility".

"We've been scanning for an unknown package and stuff like that already so now I think we'll be even more anxious about wires", she told the Guardian. The tripwire set off the explosive device that was placed near a fence at 8:32 p.m. on Sunday March 18, police said.

March 20, 2018: Sixth explosion reported in southwest Austin.

In Austin, Texas, investigators are trying to figure out why someone is targeting the city with a series of bombs.

The bombings have raised the question of whether the case can be more accurately seen as domestic terrorism or a hate crime - in part because the first victims of the bombs were people of color, including two black men who were killed.

An earlier version of this story said that San Antonio Police Chief McManus reported that there was a second suspicious package at the Schertz facility.

At 9 a.m., KXAN received information a FedEx Office Print and Ship Center at 5601 Brodie Lane in south Austin was surrounded by authorities. Those two bombs and a third that detonated, also on March 12 in Austin, were left in packages on the victims' doorsteps.

Police say they do believe they are dealing with a serial bomber.

"Successful serial murderers are determined, adaptable and cognisant of their surroundings, which allows them to learn from their mistakes, improve their abilities and implement new tactics to remain steps ahead of those searching for them", said Enzo Yaksic, co-director of Northeastern University's Atypical Homicide Research Group.

Sanders says federal authorities are working closely with local authorities and have offered their full support and cooperation "to make sure we're doing whatever is necessary and whatever is possible" to stop the explosions and find whomever is responsible.

How the fourth and fifth bombings complicated the investigation.

The employee was evaluated and released, according to Michael Carpenter, the mayor of Schertz.

Four hundred and ninety-seven packages have been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, they did not provide any other additional information on who exactly the package was meant for.

Police dispatched a hazardous materials team to the FedEx ground delivery facility, which is located in the 4100 block of McKinney Falls Parkway in southeast Austin.

Austin have been on edge after four bombings that have killed two and injured four others in under three weeks.

At the White House, Donald Trump said "sick people" were behind the bombings and called Austin "a great place, a tremendous place".

Since the bombings began city police have responded to some 700 suspicious package calls, the Austin-American Statesman said.

The most recent blast detonated at a FedEx distribution center outside the city of San Antonio, Texas.
