Apple could buy a staggering number of iPhone displays this year

LG Electronics` G6

Yesterday, a report revealed that Apple has been secretly working to develop microLED display technology in-house, reducing its need to be purchase panels from other suppliers. This can give MicroLED excellent contrast, power efficiency, and viewing angles without OLED's compromises on brightness or longevity.

Taking control over MicroLED technology would help Apple stay strong in the smartphone market and outpace arch rivals including Samsung which tout about their superior screens. Apple could leverage its development in the technology to eventually produce screens for both iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

Apple - and many other - products now use OLED screens on their devices.

These challenges led to Apple nearly killing its own development project a year ago, according to Bloomberg's sources, but in the end it made a decision to continue working on the technology.

The project is code-named "T159", and the engineers are working on the designing and production of the MicroLED screens.

As CNBC reports, shares in a range of Apple suppliers fell after Bloomberg's article went live. Its latest iPhone X was manufactured with OLED technology of Samsung.

Thus, if the microLED technology is good for commercial products, then Apple, which is now producing its own screens, in secret, will have to employ other companies to manufacture the components. "But Apple could own MicroLED". And when it happens, it'll likely be on the Apple Watch - Bloomberg's sources claim Apple had successfully built a MicroLED Apple Watch prototype.

Apple is expected to start producing also its own iPhone chips. It is being said that Apple will concentrate on the MicroLED project closer to the Headquarters at their Santa Clara facility in California.

Apple's focus on MicroLED is due to the benefits offered, notably they create thinner, brighter, and less power-hungry displays without the downsides of OLED (limited life span, brightness).

For the very first time in the round, the Cupertino tech conglomerate, Apple, is ready to come up with its ambitious undertaking. Japan Display dropped as much as 4.4 percent, Sharp tumbled as much as 3.3 percent and Samsung slid 1.4 percent.
