Packers sign Kyle Fuller to offer sheet; Bears must decide whether to match

When the news broke, everyone knew the Packers certainly weren't going to sign Fuller to an affordable contract that they knew the Bears would match and give them Fuller at a great rate for years to come.

The Packers on Friday signed Kyle Fuller to an offer sheet, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The Packers expressed interest in free-agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Carolina Panthers but then failed his physical. Fuller was selected 14th overall by the Bears in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Fuller, a former first-round pick, was given the transition tag by the Bears before free agency opened.

The Bears placed the transition tag on Fuller on March 6, guaranteeing the cornerback $12.971 million for 2018 and giving Chicago the right to match any offers.

The Bears the face the possibility of letting Fuller go to their NFC North rival if they don't match the offer. Get the cornerback they want and make a rival weaker or make said rival pay their a player top dollar.

Judging from the particulars of Kyle Fuller's contract, the Packers looked to protect themselves just in case the Bears declined to match. He made two interceptions and he broke up 22 passes.

At first glance, it's not hard to understand why the Bears were in a big hurry to get their hands on the deal.

Instead, the Packers still have a dire need at cornerback after shipping mercurial Damarious Randall, their 2015 first-round pick, to Cleveland last week in a trade for backup quarterback DeShone Kizer.

The exact structure of the deal Fuller received will be interesting. The Bears in essence paid an additional $5 million (and avoided negotiating with him) for what amounts to a two-year contract. But even if they don't, the Packers worked the system in their favor. Breeland reportedly cut his foot in a non-football injury earlier this month and it was enough of a concern to the Panthers medical staff that the deal was called off.
