3rd vehicle pulled from bridge collapse wreckage

3 bridge-collapse victims found dead in cars recovered from scene in Florida, confirming death toll of at least 6

Denney Pate, the project's chief engineer, left a voicemail on the landline of a Florida Department of Transportation employee, the department said. He also said, "obviously the cracking is not good and something's going to have to be, ya know, done to fix that".

According to a FDOT statement, the voicemail was not heard by an agency employee until Friday, March 16, after he returned to his office from an assignment. At least six people were killed when the 174-foot, 960-ton bridge collapsed.

Carlos Giménez, the Miami-Dade mayor, said he believed MCM workers were conducting a stress test on the bridge when it collapsed, while Florida's junior U.S. senator, Marco Rubio, tweeted that support cables were being tightened.

Authorities said they have retrieved three bodies Saturday from the debris of a collapsed pedestrian bridge at Florida International University.

"I looked up and in an instant the bridge was collapsing on us completely", the student said in a phone interview with Associated Press.

A spokesman for MCM told CNN the company has had $152 million in federally funded government projects in the past five years.

A construction firm involved in this week's fatal bridge collapse in Florida was accused previously by a subcontractor of failing to properly design a bridge construction system after an accident in Virginia.

"That's a type of technology that's widely used, but any time that you have an event like this, a collapse that nobody would ever expect to happen, it's going to make people think twice about the methods", said Spencer Mallard, chair of Miami law firm Lydecker Diaz's construction group.

In an interview with WIOD, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, raised the possibility of bringing criminal charges against those responsible for the tragedy.

Biesiada did not immediately say what Brown and the two other employees were doing at the time of the collapse but said the deceased man was "working on the project providing installation support for our products".

"Why they had to build this monstrosity in the first place to get children across the street?" said an anguished Joe Smitha of Palm Harbor, whose niece, Alexa Duran, was crushed in Thursday's collapse at Florida International University.

Despite the voicemail, the FDOT says at no point did FIGG engineers or the FIU build team communicate that there was a life-safety issue.

Workers covered the extracted vehicles with tarps and placed them onto flatbed trucks, which then took them away.

Maurice Kemp, deputy mayor of Miami-Dade County, said today that the primary goal is to remove all victims and cars in a "dignified and respectful manner".

He said the same is true for other bridges that FIGG has been involved with, including four spans at the interchange of Route 2 and Interstate 84 in East Hartford.

Scheduled to open in 2019, the bridge would have provided safe passage over a canal and six lanes of traffic and created a showpiece architectural feature connecting the campus of FIU with the community of Sweetwater, where many students live.

FIGG had one project since 2000 that was cited for safety violations, according to the OSHA database.
