Google Lens to become available to iOS users in coming week

Last year, Google announced Google Lens for iOS at the I/O conference. Now, the company is peeking over the fence towards Cupertino, and giving its rival platform some of the augmented reality love.

Google Lens will allow you to "get more details or take action on your photo", according to the company.

The Verge notes that "Lens is an on-demand object recognition tool, accessible through the Google Photos app".

Google has big plans for Lens, as it made clear at Google I/O previous year.

Google Lens isn't a standalone app, it's built into the Google Photos experience, although it'd be great to see it become a standalone app - maybe Apple should have a similar competitor in place soon. Snap Ed Sheeran in the street, for example, and you get links to his YouTube and Facebook pages, and so on.

If Google Lens hasn't "rolled out" to your device yet, you'll see its "i" instead, as I did this morning.

Once you've got Lens, you'll be able to use its tricks to learn more about the buildings, plants, works of art and other objects around you. Google Lens can also identify business cards and offer to create a new contact from that information. Look at flyers that mention events, and they'll be added to your calendar apps if you so desire.

If you have Web & App Activity turned on, meanwhile, your Google Account will keep track of your searches.

The feature made its debut alongside the Google Pixel 2 announcement.

Let us know when you start seeing Google Lens support within Google Photos for iOS in Canada.
