NEW GODS Movie By Director AVA DUVERNAY On Its Way

CREDIT Warwick Saint for Variety

Deadline reports that DuVernay, whose work on A Wrinkle in Time made her "the first woman of color to helm a $100 million-plus live-action film", has been signed by Warner Bros. and DC to helm an all-new feature-length adaptation of The New Gods, Jack Kirby's iconic 1970s-and-onward comic book franchise. The director might have dropped a hint about this film late previous year when she referred to the New Gods' Big Barda as her favorite superheroine. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a lush paradise, and the other Apokolips, which sounds like Dante's version of hell.

There are plenty of compelling New Gods, other than Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Darkseid and Highfather.

It appears A Wrinkle In Time hasn't tethered Ava DuVernay to Disney. The New Gods are some of DC's most unusual and intriguing characters, rooted deep in sci and fantasy, and not the most approachable for new fans. Darkseid is the ruler of Apokolips, a hellish planet.

The New Gods are natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips.

The New Gods takes place outside of the confines of the DC multiverse. In many ways Orion's counterpart - she, too, struggles against inner darkness in an attempt to fight for optimism and a better way that isn't inherently inside her - Barda's love for Mister Miracle provides an emotional anchor to the vast mythology at the heart of the Fourth World Saga as a whole, and makes her one of the most well-rounded characters in the entire epic. For example, the New Gods of Earth Prime are the same New Gods of Earth-2.

We've already seen hints for the New Gods in DC films so far.

Who are the New Gods? He is assisted in his quest for knowledge by the Mobius Chair, which allows him to travel through space and time, not to mention offering up deus ex machina plot resolutions when writers require them.

Warner Bros. did not name a screenwriter.
