Broward Sheriff Releases Footage Of Deputy Outside During Parkland Shooting

Terry Renna APA police officer stands watch at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Fla. Feb. 28 2018

Breitbart News reported that surveillance video from outside the school appears to show Peterson arrive outside building 12 and remain outside while Nikolas Cruz shot and kill students and teachers.

The week after the shooting, Israel assailed Peterson for his response, describing the video recording as showing the deputy heading to the building, taking up a position outside and then failing to rush in to confront the gunman, breaking with generally accepted police practice.

The video starts about a minute after the suspect, Nikolas Cruz, began firing his semi-automatic rifle, according to the timeline released by the Sheriff's office.

The video footage does not include sound, but the sheriff's office last week released dispatch recordings that captured some of what Peterson said during the massacre. It shows him and two staff members rushing in a cart toward the three-story freshman building where the shootings happened.

But they do expose the 54-year-old Peterson's failure to respond, authorities say.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson was suspended without pay, and chose to resign.

As a national debate about the response by law enforcement to the February 14 rampage and random gun violence in America rages, the 27-minute video shows Broward County Deputy Sheriff Scot Peterson failing to enter Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where he worked as an armed guard.

The response by Peterson and the sheriff's office is under review by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Shortly thereafter Peterson resigned. "His actions were enough to warrant an internal affairs investigation", the sheriff's office said in a statement accompanying the video's release following a judge's order on Monday.

On Wednesday Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer entered a not guilty plea on Cruz's behalf, after his lawyers indicated he would stand mute, or refuse to plead either innocent or guilty. Video of what happened inside the school was not released. On Tuesday, the state attorney in Broward County, Fla., announced it intends to seek the death penalty.
