Australia explores visas for 'persecuted' white South African farmers

Australia is investigating what visas can be offered to white South African farmers who are facing violence and land seizures at home

Australia's home affairs minister, Peter Dutton, reiterated his own earlier comments that Canberra was looking at ways of fast-tracking "in-country persecution" visas for white South African farmers to travel to Australia as part of a refugee-humanitarian program.

We hear stories of horrific circumstances from our members every day.

"We want people who want to come here, abide by our laws, integrate into our society, work hard, not lead a life on welfare".

Dutton said that those wanting to leave might be considered under the "in-country persecution" visa category, or through a refugee-humanitarian programme.

"There are a lot of persecuted groups that deserve special attention from the Australian government and I certainly would not be starting with the white South African farmers", she said.

As Breitbart News has reported, South Africans are increasingly anxious that the government's plans to expropriate land from white farmers without compensation could destroy the economy and the country's fragile democracy.

Dutton made the offer in response to Pretoria's vow to enact land "expropriation without compensation" to redress land confiscations of the colonial and apartheid era.

One thing we can say, however, is that Malcolm Fraser's prophecy looks to be right on the money.

"We've often joked that if it were White Zimbabwean farmers or White South African farmers arriving by boat in Australia, there wouldn't be any mandatory detention", he told Al Jazeera.

"We have a huge South African expat community within Australia".

Government spokesman Ndivhuwo Mabaya told the BBC there was no reason for any country in the world to suspect a section of the South African population was in danger from its democratically elected leaders.

Another federal Cabinet minister, Steve Ciobo, agreed the farmers should be given special attention by Australia, arguing the situation in South Africa was "cause for concern".

"I wouldn't say that white farmers are more likely to be murdered than other groups, we don't have enough evidence of that", he added. "That threat does not exist", he said.

We regret that the Australian Government chose not to use the available diplomatic channels to raise concerns or to seek clarification on the land redistribution process in South Africa.

"The South African government has been very clear and transparent on the land reforms process and the matter is now before Parliament".

The ruling African National Congress announced at its conference in December that it would press ahead with plans to amend the constitution to allow for redistribution of land without compensation to the affected owner.

Here is a look at how some worldwide newspapers covered the story which caused a minor diplomatic row between Australia and South Africa.
