Sessions Considering Firing FBI's McCabe Days Before Retirement, Jeopardizing His Pension

Just Days Before Retirement: Watchdog Group Recommends Firing Former FBI Director Andrew McCabe

The recommendation from the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility is likely to add fuel to the political fire surrounding former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who abruptly stepped down from his post this year but technically remained an Federal Bureau of Investigation employee.

Just days before he plans to officially retire, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe might be fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a source told CNN. If he is fired first, he could lose those. President Donald Trump has gone after McCabe publicly several times, calling him a "Comey friend" who "got $700,000 from H [illary Clinton] for wife ['s political campaign]"! The Justice Department said no formal decision has been made on McCabe's fate.

Trump's statements about McCabe put pressure on Sessions to fire him, and would create an appearance of impropriety even if Sessions' decision to fire McCabe were backed by a formal recommendation.

Through a representative, McCabe declined to comment to the Washington Post.

The inspector general was interested in McCabe's role in authorizing officials to talk about the matter, people familiar with the case said, because the story detailed ongoing criminal investigative work, which law enforcement officials are not normally allowed to discuss. The inspector general's report, which led to the recommendation from the disciplinary office, has not been released but is expected out soon.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department acknowledged to The Times that McCabe's employment is under review.

McCabe's retirement is set to go into effect Sunday and his firing could jeopardize his pension as a 21-year veteran of the bureau, according to the report. But it seems McCabe hasn't been a Trump favorite, either. During an Oval office meeting in May, Trump is said to have asked McCabe whom he voted for in the presidential election and vented about the donations. The president remarked in December that McCabe was "racing the clock to retire with full benefits". McCabe represents but a piece of that work.

Horowitz's investigation is looking at a variety of allegations, including whether it was improper for former FBI Director James Comey to make a public announcement about not recommending prosecution over the email arrangement - he also faulted Clinton and her associates for being "extremely careless" with classified information.

McCabe has been on leave since stepping down in January.
