Sunday Confirmed Tiger Woods Will Win Again

What Tiger Woods said Saturday at the Valspar Championship Jasen Vinlove USA TODAY Sports

Tiger Woods' play in the final round of the Valspar Championship Sunday in Palm Harbor produced the highest-rated non-major PGA Tour broadcast in almost five years, NBC announced Monday.

Woods could not drain another effort from distance on the last, though, and signed for a 70 to tie for second with Patrick Reed on nine under, one behind Casey, who was five back at the start of the day but shot 65 to post a clubhouse target that remained unmatched.

That left Woods as the only man who could catch the leader, but the former world number one was only able to make par at the end of a largely frustrating round featuring just two birdies and a solitary bogey. As a massive gallery - energized by Woods's mere presence in a tournament he had never played, then whipped to the point of frenzy by his late Sunday charge - pressed in around the green, Woods studied his long birdie putt from all angles, took his putter back, and unforgivably left it almost three feet short.

As Woods waited to hit his uphill 185-yard, seven-iron approach to the 18th, fans pleaded for another bit of magic.

"The one thing you can't do", Woods said with visible regret, "is leave it short".

Missing, that is, until the par-three 17th, where Woods perfectly read and then executed a 43-foot birdie putt, his ball curling deliciously into the centre of the cup as the gallery went berserk.

Woods lifted his golf club into the air and touched the bill of his cap in response, before raising his hat fully off his head and waving as the ovation grew louder. "I want him to win again - because I want these kids to see what we dealt with for a long, long time".

"I felt very comfortable, actually".

"My game was quite solid this entire week".

"I keep getting just a little better and a little sharper".

Tiger Woods hasn't won a golf tournament since 2013.

When Woods is on the course, when he is competing on a Sunday, golf is relevant.

Woods hopes to build on this momentum when he journeys next week to a more familiar stomping ground - the Bay Hill resort in Orlando where he has won the tournament formerly hosted by Arnold Palmer eight times.

"I think I've gotten a little better than what I was a couple of weeks ago", Woods said.

"I've had some great memories there".
