Richard Sherman: Jimmy Garoppolo had 'huge part' in decision to join 49ers

LOS ANGELES CA – DECEMBER 31 Aldrick Robinson

The four-time All-Pro cornerback signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, two days after being released by the rival Seattle Seahawks. Not only did the signing make headlines because of the destination, but also because Sherman himself negotiated the deal, himself. Sherman also had a cleanup surgery on his opposite ankle during the offseason. "Lynch and veteran Niners cap man Paraag Marathe on one side, Sherman and his fiancée, Ashley, on the other side". We'll have to sit and wait to see if the 49ers make the jump but right now all reports are leaning toward this becoming a reality for Sherman and the 49ers. Sherman will turn 30 this month and is coming off an Achilles injury.

Ultimately, it became clear to Sherman that his best fit would be with his once-hated rival in San Francisco, a fit Sherman attributed to many things, including a desire to stay on the West Coast, the presence of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Shanahan's offensive scheme and, of course, the chance to play the Seahawks twice a year. Though only $3 million is officially guaranteed at signing, it is fair to say the virtual guarantee is $7 million, as Sherman likely will earn his roster bonus at the start of training camp and his non-guaranteed base salary for the year.

The old memories of Sherman dominating the 49ers may still be engrained in the minds of 49ers fans. He had chosen 49ers which means he will have to face his former team twice each regular season.

"Instead of getting upset with me for going to a new team how about you get upset with the people who forced me to go".

Sherman at least brings swagger to a 49ers franchise filled with promising but mostly humble and low-key stars.

- January 19, 2014: Sherman breaks up a last-gasp pass from 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to Michael Crabtree in the end zone, securing the NFC Championship game and the Seahawks' first-ever Super Bowl berth.

"We're on the 1-yard line here!" Sherman now leads the National Football League in interceptions since he was drafted in 2011 and his 99 pass deflections also leads the entire NFL.

Richard Sherman did not choose San Francisco for the weather or the money or the restaurant scene.

It was that 2011-14 fight for NFC West - heck, National Football League - supremacy where Sherman burst onto the National Football League stage as not just a 49ers adversary but a defining symbol of a defensive-minded division.

After being released by the Seahawks, Sherman said he wanted to sign with a contender.
